The deflector consists of logs making a triangle shape

Under the cover of trees at the back of a cow pasture on a quiet country road, two dozen youths are pushing large rocks and logs into a stream.

It might sound like vandalism, an oddly coordinated teenage rebellion.

But look a little closer and you'll see it's just the opposite.

The young people are students at the Lancaster County Youth Conservation School.

They're building a sediment trap to improve Middle Creek's water quality.

The Clay Township project will create a log-faced stone deflector, said Karl Lutz, stream habitat section chief at the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.

The deflector consists of logs making a triangle shape. One edge runs along the bank, while the other two sides jut into the stream. The structure is then filled with rocks.

The device "creates a pattern of circular water" that forces the water slightly uphill, slows it down and traps silt, Lutz said.

While Middle Creek already is fairly healthy, the device will be another small step in cleaning up the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

The deflector also provides a permanent habitat for fish, Lutz said.

Caleb Greiner and Jared Groff, two friends from Manheim participating in the school, started the day by helping haul a log into the creek.

They stood on either side of the stout trunk and carried it with logging tongs and help from another pair of students.

After the three logs, ranging from 5 to 8 feet in length, were in place, the students, mostly the boys, took turns hammering rebar pins into holes that adult volunteers had drilled in the wood.

They shouted encouragement when their classmates hit the pin and offered collective groans when the sledgehammer glanced off the bark or splashed the water instead.

After the logs were firmly secured,aluminum foil tape, the construction team traded tasks with another group of students. They'd been upstream learning about stream life.

That group took a turn filling the log triangle with rocks.

A team from Flyway Excavating of Lititz, which donated all the materials for the project, transported the rocks with a skidloader from a pile in the field to the stream bank.

The youths then rolled the rocks, which were up to a foot long, into place under the direction of camp counselors and Flyway workers.

Meanwhile, the log-placing team was now scouring the creek for macroinvertebrates.

Those are spineless animals that are large enough to be seen without a microscope, said Hannah Brubach, an intern with the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

These critters are susceptible to pollution, so finding them in a stream is a good indicator of stream health, she said.

Crayfish, which the students found in abundance, are an exception to that rule.

They can tolerate almost any conditions and are "not a good indicator," she said.

Caleb Greiner's group netted a more interesting find, a several-inch-long hellgrammite.

Brubach estimated the centipedelike invertebrate was 4 or 5 years old.

The group also found a clam, which Brubach said is an invasive species, and a minnow.

Log-faced stone deflectors can be built only with a permit from the Department of Environmental Protection, Lutz said.

Robert and Ruth Fox, the owners of Clay Farm, where the project took place, have welcomed the students for several years.

In return, they end up with a new stream-control fixture basically every year.

The Foxes, whom the Conservation District honored last year with an Outstanding Cooperator Award, have implemented numerous conservation practices on their farm.

On this sunny day, the students benefited from one of those installations — a riparian buffer.

It's a stand of trees along a creek that controls runoff and shades the water from excessive sun.

The stream water-quality project was only a small part of the Youth Conservation School experience.

The students lived for the week at the Northern Lancaster County Game and Fish Protective Association in Denver.

The club shuts down for a week each summer to accommodate the tenting students.

We had terrible trouble getting stuff, because the bad guy's essentially a psychopath, and people don't want their brands associated with a psychopath. And then car people and bike people want to see nice riding shots with somebody that's the right age to ride a Harley Davidson or what have you. They definitely don't want to see a complete loony dressed in women's clothing and killing people.

So we've found it difficult to do, so we've had to resort to a Justice Forever solution. I knew somebody that races cars, and they have a collector, and the collector's not about. And I said I could store it for a little while. "Store it? In what way?" "Well, I've got this big warehouse..." [Laughs]

I said we'll look after it and get it cleaned. And he just looked at me and said you'll get me sued, or sacked or whatever. I said I'd take the number plates off, we'll get some great photographs with people leaning against it. We did the same with the other cars, we sort of told them it was for a different film [Laughs].

I've known them and worked for them for a while, so it won't be as bad as that. Unless... I keep not sleeping. I have this terrible dream that the fucking bulldozers have come in early and driven over the Ferrari and there it was all flat[Laughs]. But yeah, it's good. These sort of films, to get it so it's great, kapton tape with the details, you have to go the extra mile. Especially in the current economic climate, and the producers have got a tough time, because they want to beat us into submission. "Do you really need that? Do you really need a Ferrari?" Everyone needs a Ferrari!

So with the detail of this [Kick-Ass' lair] we've expanded it as much as we can, and there are a few things here that maybe shouldn't have been here. But then the guys who did all the graphics, we've had problems with that, because people don't want to clear things - maps and Google and stuff. So we've had to make our own stuff. My son did some of this out here. My youngest son did the thing of Kick-Ass holding on to the Empire State Building.

We were filming in a school, where I'd been before to shoot some commercials for Sky, and so I got to know the headmistress there. I had to pull the odd fast one on her, so what I've done is get the kids to do Americana as projects. [Laughs] So I paid for the paper, but they've done all these pictures...

I like to see it as a strength, and we stand on the shoulders of that. So we take what Mark [Millar] and John [Romita Jr] do, and the script, and have loads of conversations with them. I'm not a corduroy jacket-type designer that would die without listening to Mahler. I like being part of a group, that team effort. The cameraman's a good friend of mine, and I don't particularly have an ego, so I don't care if it's not my drawing, or it's somebody else's.

Really, without sounding like too much of a wanker, it's for the good of the group. There's loads of things I'd have liked to have done - I could have had an artist's tantrum. "Why won't you let me fucking do it?" I'm not saying I haven't had a few. But what's really important, and nice about the first one, was that when Mark and John came, they really got it, and really liked it. They could see that we'd drawn things out and used different elements. I find colour really important, and I like using colour, and I added that to it. They could see the logic to it, because it stood on the shoulders of their work. We didn't say, "That's all shit. We'll do our own thing."

It's a difficult thing, because you don't want to be constrained too much. But we've gone off on tangents. With this, we're set in a basement, but you don't really see the basement in the books. I really like the film Fight Club, and I wanted this big oppressive weight close to your head. I wanted to do this so it went up and was just blackness beyond the pipes, so there's the weight, and the feeling that they have the weight on their shoulders. Whereas the evil lair, it's big and airy, it's got cages and sharks and what have you. It would give you some of the narrative, and reinforce it.

If I'm being really honest, I'm finding it a help, as well. Because when I get lost, and I start wandering off into wanting to spray Ferraris orange. "Why can't I spray my Ferraris orange? I want them orange!" I find a way back by looking through their stuff and talking to them.

While main actors filmed a scene in the street

A little corner of Paradise, created in the grounds of the Lambton estate in County Durham, has been home for the past few months to the cast and crew of the biggest BBC drama ever made in the North East.

With the re-commission of The Paradise, following the success of its debut series last autumn, the elaborate set which had been wrapped in industrial plastic during the wait, has been back in action since April with the cast, and a largely new crew, filming the next instalments of the costume drama which hooked viewers with its glamorous department store-set tale of romance and intrigue inspired by a French classic by Emile Zola.

Left hanging by the unresolved fledgling romance between ambitious young shopgirl Denise, played by Joanna Vanderham, and store owner Moray (Game of Thrones actor Emun Elliott) who at the end of the series jilted his fiancee Katherine Glendenning (Elaine Cassidy), fans won’t have to wait much longer for the next stage in the 1800s saga.

Storylines, written by Lark Rise to Candleford creator Bill Gallagher, are secret for now but there’ll be a handful of new characters in series two, the main one being Tom Weston who, many will be surprised to hear, is a new husband for jilted Katherine. What’s more he has a secret. He’s being played by Cutting It and Law & Order UK actor Ben Daniels.

I was invited back to the set, double sided tape which I visited during the making of the first series on a similarly sunny day, and producer Simon Lewis gave a tour of the specially-built Victorian style street – where the ornate facade of The Paradise store (TV shows it with an extra level thanks to CGI trickery) stands out from the other mostly run-down shops - and Lambton Castle itself which doubles as the store interior.

But whereas that sunny day last time was a rarity – last year’s filming took in some of the wettest summer weather on record with the unit base flooding and delays caused by structural damage to the castle’s great hall which they’d already renovated – there have been soaring temperatures this time.

Even so, it hasn’t been all plain-sailing.

“We flooded again!” Simon tells me. “So we’ve still had a bit of trouble but we’re used to it now.”

Another problem was that even wrapping everything up in heavy-grade protective plastic - “so that is looks like a Christo exhibition” says Simon - proved no answer to the extreme cold in the castle which is why, says Simon, the Lambton family never lived there for long, moving instead to Biddick Hall on the estate which is used in the series as the Glendenning family home.

“There was a lot of damp coming through so we had to re-plaster,” says Simon, showing the way from Moray’s office through the shop floor into the ladieswear department (presided over by the imperious Miss Audrey played by Sarah Lancashire). It’s this area he says that Lord Lambton used to store his classic car collection of Ferraris and Aston Martins.

Simon says of the set: “It’s completely self-contained, like we’ve got our own studio here.”

While main actors filmed a scene in the street, local extras milled around in their period costumes.

Claire Dowens, from Newcastle, was corseted-up as a middle-class shopper, typical clientele of The Paradise, but also gets to wear a black dress to play a shop assistant in other scenes.

“I prefer the shop staff one - it’s cooler!” says the 22-year-old who also worked as an extra on the first series.

“It’s been so hot. I remember last year, especially night shoots around September, it was freezing.”

The 22-year-old, whose extra work has taken in locally-made film A Song For Marion starring Gemma Arterton, has hopes for drama school in London next year and is finding all this experience useful.

“It’s great to see the whole process, the different camera techniques, and talk to the actors,” she says.

There are six weeks left of filming and the series, whose cast also includes Matthew McNulty and Sonya Cassidy, who is currently also filming for Vera, is due to air in the autumn.
