‘Thalaiva’ fails to keep date with fans

Actor Vijay’s much-hyped Eid release ‘Thalaivaa’ failed to show up in theatres in Tamil Nadu on Friday, much to the agony of his fans. The film’s producers, who held discussions with exhibitors till late Friday night, were hopeful of getting it released at least by Saturday afternoon.

Though the producers attribute the delay to security concerns, with various theatres and exhibitors receiving threats from unknown groups, industry insiders say the State government’s rejection of the producers’ application for exemption from entertainment tax has delivered a body blow to the high budget movie.
The tax burden may lead to a considerable cut in earnings and is often key to the financial success of blockbusters. However, one of its producers, Sunil Chandraprakash Jain, said the delay in the release was not due to lack of tax exemptionHe told The Hindu that they got a communication from a senior police officer that the police had not called for any postponement of the film’s release and that they were free to release it whenever they wanted. “There were reports of threats by various groups to theatres.Matco Packaging Llc suppliers of BOPP tape, We just wanted to be sure. We are ascertaining the ground reality and hope to release the movie at least by Saturday afternoon”.

A government order dated August 8 said the Commercial Taxes Department Review Committee refused entertainment tax exemption to ‘Thalaivaa’ citing various reasons: the presence of over 400 English words in the dialogues, depiction of violence and the hero “taking law into his own hands”. All panel members said the movie, which has a ‘U’ certificate’, had excessive violence and English and Hindi dialogues. But come this Friday and one will see as many as 11 films, a mix of Bollywood, English and regional films hitting the theatres. The biggest crowd puller for now is the Tusshar Kapoor, Dolly Ahluwalia, Ranvir Shorey, Vinay Pathak starrer ‘Bajatey Raho’. With the promos and promotions being done on a lavish scale, the film looks like it is off to a promising start. Competing with ‘Bajatey Raho’ is the Manish Tiwary directed, Prateik Babbar starrer ‘Issaq’, an adaptation of ‘Romeo And Juliet’.

And amidst these supposedly average ‘surprise’ fares is Tanuj Virwani (actress Rati Agnihotri’s son) making his debut with ‘Love U Soniyo’ and Poonam Pandey promising a raunchy endeavour with ‘Nasha’. While this is Bollywood, there is ‘The Wolverine’ from Hollywood, ‘Shrimanth Damodar Panth’, ‘Time OK Please’ in Marathi, ‘Best Of Luck’ in Punjabi and 3 Tamil films also hitting the marquee this week. With 11 releases scheduled in one week, there isn’t enough choice for theatre owners to have their preferences clear and choosy about the movies.Online supplies a large range of double sided tape. While many multiplexes have already warned filmmakers and producers to shift dates to ensure better collections, sadly many have not adhered to the warnings. Now they are left with no options but to suffer.

Girish Wankhede from Cinemax has said, “We are releasing all the eleven films but have still not decided how many screens and shows can be given to each.”Shahshant Shah,Metal Repair Aluminum foil tape Products is also excellent for metal. director of ‘Bajatey Raho’ says he is left with no option but to release the film on 26 July as the subsequent Fridays are reserved for BIG films. He is upbeat about the film and being different in content and sees as a possible attraction from audiences.

Considering the fact that even last week’s releases ‘D-Day’ and ‘Ramaiya Vastavaiya’ have been allotted lesser screens and limited shows, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Friday releases fighting over screens. Thanks to ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ having a super run at the box-office and a ‘Tax-Free’ status (not applied in Mumbai yet) the film continues to get maximum screens till date. While ‘Lootera’ and ‘Raanjhana’ have been pulled down from screens, there are still places where the film is managing to have a show to its name. In this state of affairs, it is but obvious that the regional films, especially the 3 Tamil release and one occasional Punjabi release will largely lose out.

As per the Maharashtra government’s mandate, the two Marathi films will get a release, but with odd timings, whether audiences be interested to visit the multiplex is a matter of huge debate.Fun Cinemas have already confirmed that the Marathi and Punjabi films aren’t releasing in their arena. Which means it’s now 9 to battle for. It’s time for fearful Friday. All we say is ‘Best Of Luck’ to Tanuj Virwani and Poonam Pandey for ‘Love U Soniyo’ and ‘Nasha’ respectively.

First up is controversy queen Poonam Pandey's Bollywood debut film Nasha. The film, which marks the debut of the former Kingfisher girl, has already been in the news for all the wrong reasons.

Poonam Pandey's bold posters were torn and burnt in two metropolitan cities. The film, which has been directed by Jism director Amit Saxena, is sure going to grab eyeballs for its bold content.

Next up is director Manish Tiwari's Issaq featuring Prateik Babbar and debutante Amyra Dastur. After two successful love stories this year – Raanjhanaa and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani – can this modern take on Romeo and Juliet make its mark? Only time can tell!
In the third release, actors Vinay Pathak and Ranvir Shorey are joining hands with Tusshar Kapoor for a laugh riot Bajatey Raho. National award winning actress Dolly Ahluwalia of Vicky Donor fame will also be seen in a pivotal role in the film helmed by the Dasvidaniya director Sushant Shah.
